DOVER, N.H. (AP) - Mourners said farewell today to Irish singer and storyteller Tommy Makem with a final round of applause, after a two-hour celebration of his life that filled a church in Dover (New Hampshire) with laughter and tears.

Makem's life-long musical partner, Liam Clancy, sang in honor of his friend. Clancy and Makem teamed up after emigrating to the United States from Ireland in the late 1950s where they began careers in acting, before turning to music.

Armed with his banjo, tinwhistle, poetry, stagecraft and his baritone voice, Makem helped spread stories and songs of Irish culture around the world.

He died last Wednesday in Dover of lung cancer. He was 74.
