My wife and I as newly weds living in Niagara Falls, NY, had the great pleasure of attending a Tommy Makem and the Clancy Bros. concert in Buffalo, the spring of 1968. Can't ever forget how wonderful the sounds were in person, the "Bonnie Shoals of Herring", "Finnegan's Wake" and all their great songs of the time. How joyous and how sad and quiet their songs could be. Great talents.

My boyfriend and I saw Tommy several times at the Newport Irish Festival and each time this event drew near we would talk about how we looked forward to seeing him again. We would remember how much we enjoyed his shows and agreed on his remarkable talent and wit. He really focused on his audience, having them sing along, and he had a story for each song that was beautifully done.Tommy will always remain in our memories. His legacy is one to be proud of, remembered and I'm sure will be carried on by his children. Our deepest condolences to Tommy's family at this time and thoughts and prayers are with you all. God Bless.

Tommy is a Icon that will never be forgotten. He not only highlighted our rich culture but enhanced it in so many ways. Every day he had on this earth was filled with his love for Poetry, Song and Story. I can't tell you how thankfully we should be for having him here for 1 minute let alone 70 plus years. All our prayers go out to the Makem family. I first met Tommy in the 70's when he was performing at The Keg Room in Springfield Ma. He was kind enough to spend time with a starstruck fan with aspirations of becoming a folksinger. His words of encouragement meant the world to me at the time and still echo to me through the years. We had since shared many backstage conversations and I cherished each and every one. From my family to The Makems we share your sorrow ,our prayers and thoughts are with you.

Tommy Makem and his music have been a part of my life for decades, and my children grew up listening to his wonderful voice and music. I had the great privilege of meeting him at the Irish Festival in Littleton, Colorado four years ago; where his genuine heartfelt warmth, humility, and deep faith shone through. I was as impressed with him as I have always been with his music. He made the world a glad, more united place, and he is sadly missed in our family. My sympathies to his. God bless you.

Every time Tommy was in the area, my husband and I would make it a point to go see him. We loved his funny stories, his warmth, and, most of all, his music. We especially loved seeing him at the Irish Pavillion--it felt like we were sitting at home listening to a dear friend play. He will be missed by many.

It has always been an honour and a great pleasure to have shared many a stage with the legendary Tommy Makem . On the numerous occasions that I met him at various festivals throughout the USA, he was never anything but a pure gentleman and as courteous a man as you will find anywhere. He could always hold an audience in the palm of his hand from the moment he stepped on the stage. If it was not for Tommy & co. ,I might not be where I am today. They laid the ground for us all. It is with great sadness that we mourn his passing. I know his very talented family will keep the tradition going. A great bunch of lads that I have the pleasure of knowing. May he wander in peace in the Four GReen Fields that he loved. Sincere condolences to his family and friends on both sides of the pond.Sean & Breda McGuinnessDublin City Ramblers

Tommy, you were a musical angel from heaven. As a child, I'd go to Makem/Clancy concerts. It always brought such joy to my mother (and total laughter from me, I loved the stories). Later, I'd go to Tommy Makem concerts with my wife. He dedicated a song to her when performing on our anniversary. Our own children have grown up listening to Tommy's beautiful voice, stories, songs. Ah, the memories. The laughter and tears of the music. Our prayers are with the Makem family.

I came to America in the early '80's and was lost here for a little while. I saw a concert with Tommy and Liam Advertized, went to it and laughed and cried for about two hours and for over twenty years since have believed since that night isn't it grand boys, isn't it grand...he was and is a true legend and his music will live on way after all of us have passed on. God bless you Tom, you gave so much to so many and you will never be forgotten.

Tommy, through his actions, taught our generation that it was ok to be a caring, sensitve, passionate male. He was a great role model for us and he also taught passion for what mattered through his music. My grandmother, Alice O'Connor taught me to love and respect the men that gave Ireland meaning beyond all the sterotypes.I will always carry his message with me as a therapist and hopefully pass it on to the clients who come to me for healing.God bless you and my grandmother Alice, whose faith in me and Ireland are now reaping the rewards that were hoped for

On behalf of the Irish communtiy at Tir Na Nog Irish pub in Raleigh NC. I would like to extend our sympathy to the entire Makem family both here and at home in Keady Co Armagh. I am from Camloch Co Armagh, but reside in NC.The last time I saw Tommy we had bumped into each other in Carlingford He was out shopping and he laughed when we met.He called me the Bessbrook Button Maker a ref to an ole song. I sent an email just a few days back with my plans to visit with him at The Rhode Island Irish fest on labor day weekend.Sadly that will not happen. I was glad to see he made it home to Armagh befor his passing. Tommy can rest in peace knowing that his sons will carry on the torch that he lit all those years ago. I am proud to be able to say that I am from the same County as Tommy Makem. May he rest in peace. SlainteAnnie NiceWWW.Irisheventsnc.ocm

I am Italian married to an Irish folksinger. Tommy you introduced me to the best of excellence in your music, stories, decency and down to earth humor that smacked of more than a little truth. The first time I met you was after a performance at the Cape and you kissed me after meeting me....I have never forgotten. You became a hero to me right then and there, and will remain a hero until it's my time to pass from this world..I will never forget you and will speak of you often. Your life and music will live on forever. Your love of your culture led me to learn about Ireland, its history and its wonderful people.Thank you for gracing our lives Tommy Makem.Whenever I hear an Irish song, I will hear your voice.God Bless and God Speed. To the Makem family...May the God of the Universe comfort you in this sad time, be gracious to your and yours and keep you forever in His Sacred Circle of Love.

I first met Tommy at Steinmetz H.S, in Chicago in March of 1984. At the time I was listening to him on tape so much that I was hearing the songs in my sleep. I knew what kind of an entertainer I would meet, but I also guessed from the recordings that he was a delightful and interesting person as well. When I did meet him, backstage that night, I was simply blown away by what a first class gentleman he was! From then on I heard him as many times a year as possible--all over the Chicago area, in Peoria, in Madison, in Milwaukee, even in once in Dover! That was very special, as he recognized me sitting out there and made a comment about people coming all the way from Illinois! (I always tried to sit in "spitting distance", always went back to say hello, occasionally even caught him at breakfast or lunch around the hotel--he was unfailingly friendly, always delighting in company.) Definitely Milwaukee Irish Fest will never be the same...Bless you, Tommy--I'll miss you so much. There's not another like you!Deepest condolences to Katie, Shane, Conor, Rory, Molly and all the extended family.

I have so many wonderful memories of his sets ai the IP on 57th St. I'd always walk away at the end of the evening with a full tummy ( the food was great) and a raspy throat from singing all of the chorus parts. With great sadness we send this message of condolence from Canada. Our GLENN family is spread across the country now but each house contains copies of Tommy's music & lots of fond memories shared by four generations. They include my own two daughters whose first song in thier lives was WALTZING WITH BEARS. There were many kitchen parties where my now deceased uncles and father wound pound out Tommy's songs while the kids and old folks smiled in the corner. We never had the gift of a live show.We recognize Tommy as a man so proud of where he was from- and he took that pride and its stories and shared it with the world, including our old kitchen in Nova Scotia. We could not have asked for anything more.GOD BLESS Tommy and "may his giving hand never fail."

Tommy Makem will be sorely missed. Wonderful, charming personality, great wit and what a voice!! Like a fine wine, he seemed to improve with age. His song and verse warmed the cockles of many a heart for men, women and children around the world...and luckily for us, will continue to do so forever. My nine siblings pitched in for a 50th birthday gift for me...picture/drawing (done by Joanne Neff in 2002) depicting "Four Green Fields". I've always loved and treasured it...will treasure it a bit more now, for sure. And, of course, it hangs in our kitchen! My thoughts and prayers to all his children and their families, extended family and close friends. "All God's creatures got a place in the choir..." There are so many memories to share. From listening to Tommy's voice on the radio from our small kitchen in the Bronx of a Sunday afternoon. My parents singing along in their strong northern accents. To the first concert I was brought to in Fordham. Moving to the North, developing a rich repertoire of folk songs to share at many's a party.Concerts in Omagh, Magherafelt and the great reunion concert in the Ulster Hall in Belfast '84. Then alas the Song Festival in South Armagh..beautiful memories. I feel privileged to have met such a remarkable man and his sons. The link to the past and the bridge to the future. And that fourth green field.. it's blooming once again! My deepest sympathies to the Makem family, extended family, close friends to the family, and to all Makem 'family of fans' who are deeply saddened like me.

As a young girl, I watched the faces of my Irish immigrant relatives in Chicago, as they listened and watched Tommy Makem when he first arrived on our shores. They listened and watched with joy and sadness and with such intensity. He took them home to the towns they loved and missed and to the kin they left and lost. And he gently placed Ireland’s four green fields forever in the hearts and minds and souls of their American children. The minstrel’s mission is done. You were a jewel and you leave with the hope that your own fourth green field blooms once again and soon. Thank you Tommy Makem, we will hear you whistling forever. Toora Loora.

Tommy changed my life. I saw him first perform in Dublin summer of 83. Was lucky enough to see him again in Dublin summer of 84. Then I got to see him in DC. I think it was March of 86. Got to see him again last summer with my wife, one year old son (Brendan) and my in-laws. A saint once said "the glory of God is man fully alive." Tommy was a a refreshing breath of fresh air to me as a young man. I don't think I knew what a real man was until I saw him sing his songs and recite poems. He helped liberate me. Just wake up and start singing, I think is what he said to me and 50 hundred other people in the Gym in Milford CT. We here in Connecticut are still honored to have been in his presence this past March in Milford. 2 years in a row he graced us with song in spite of failing health. Thank you Tommy for sharing your talent with us and for inspiring your family to continue your tradition of song.

It was March 15, 1963 when I attended my first Clancy Bros. and Tommy Makem concert at the old Donnelly Theatre [no longer] in Boston, MA. It was magic. The song I most remember was Tommy Makem's always moving, "Whistling Gypsy". After the concert, the four gentlmen graciously signed autographs backstage for me and several of my friends [we were 10 and 11, but we were treated with the same respect and cordiality as were the other adult fans]. I extend my sympathy to his family. Tommy Makem was a true gentleman and ambassador for Irish music and culture. He won fans all over the world - and many here in the Boston area. "He whistled and he sang 'til the green woods rang, and he won the heart of a lady".

I had the great good fortune to record Tommy Makem: live at the Harp & Bard in Danvers (Mass.) and again in the WGBH studios in Allston. His humor was always present - he'd make jokes about all the cables and microphones I used place in front of him. I'd kid him back about having the loudest banjo on God's green earth! Thankfully, his music and his spirit will be with us always. Rest well, good and gentle soul.

I was so sad to read of Mr. Makem's death this morning in the Boston Globe, I have so many fond memories of seeing him perform solo and with Liam Clancy and with the brothers too. My late Mom and Dad were huge fans from back in the 60's and were so proud of them for their success in making Irish music in particular the old songs so popular in America. God Bless his family, and it's good knowing the music is being carried on by his three sons. He is gone but his music will live on for generations of Irish Americans. I am going to Ireland in a few weeks and will say a prayer for him there.

I am writing this as listening to Tommy's ANCIENT PULSING, POETRY WITH MUSIC. I never missed a Makem (Clancy Bros.) concert in Chicago in the 60's. At the height of their popularity they were booked into Chicago's beautiful Orchestra Hall and I had the joy of sitting on the stage as the group performed. The show was well oversold! My husband and children have enjoyed the music, songs, and performances of Tommy for the past almost 40 years and my children's children are growing up with his music. Tommy's beautiful baritone voice, his humor, his smile, indeed his soul, will forever be part of all of us. We Irish have been very blessed all these years to have had our hearts lifted by his gifts.God Bless.

The last time I saw Tommy was at BWI Aiport in Baltimore last summer. I immediately recognized him (he was the only person carrying a bodhran on the plane). We was funny when I asked him where he was coming and he said in his typical way, "Ach, some battlefield in Pennsylvania." It was only Gettysburg. I helped him get his luggage off the tray and off he went. For those of us who perform, Tommy was and will always be one of our heros. He was a giant and will be missed and I'm glad to have had the honor to know him. My thoughts are with the family. Heaven has just received another angel and this one will make it a livelier place with him music and wit.God bless you Tommy and thank you for you all the gifts you left us with.

How in the world did I almost overlook him? I grew up in the 50's/60's, and as a budding guitarist, took interest in the Kingston Trio but never the Clancy Bros and TM (and I'm Irish!), although I knew about them. Then, recently, just a mere week ago, through the wonders of YouTube, I discovered some old footage of TM and the Clancy's and realized I had let many gems slip by all these years. I vowed that I would have to see Liam and Tommy perform in the future, and I immediately ordered some of their music from Amazon.com. It still had not yet arrived when I learned of Tommy's passing. I was stunned and saddened to know I'll never get to see him perform live...I will learn, perform and perpetuate their music, though, in whatever small way I may be able to do so in my limited sphere of influence...may God bless him, the Clancy's and their families.

Tommy, Your music introduced me to the 'other side' of the Irish Troubles. My British heritage had heretofor inculcated a one-side version of colonialism in Ireland. The music you wrote and sang helped me to understand that there are always more 'sides' to any story and - generally - the story of the oppressed is supressed.Thank you, all of you, for wonderful music, history, and love. As I was thinking of Tommy and his legacy I thought of my time with my older Irish Babington cousins at their local pub, Gartlands, in Kingscourt in Co. Monaghan. As the drink did flow that evening the songs started. Great tunes with feeling, like songs Tommy sang. Of course the lads were disappointed that their American cousin could not remember a tune or lyrics to add to the tunes that night, there American cousin being not very musical. My dad Jack Babington remembers acting with the late Tom Clancy many years ago and will miss the late Tommmy Makem, who added so much to the sound of the Clancey lads. My thoughts are with Tommy's family, who continue the tunes on for many to enjoy.

I last saw Tommy in concert several years ago in Cumbernauld Theatre in Scotland, as usual he gave a great performance. That night he sang 'Four Green Fields' which he wrote. At that time the peace intiative was taking place in Northern Irelandand and I sugested to Tommy that this was a wonderful song but perhaps now he should add another verse to compliment the peace initiative, Tommy thought that this would be appropriate. It's good to see that the land he loved is now at peace and may he rest in peace

Tommy Makem, his talent as legendary as that of Seeger, Guthrie, Dylan and Liam Clancy has left this world. What a sad day for his family and fans. We will be forever grateful to him, not only for giving us Four Green Fields and Gentle Annie, but for the kindness he shared with us, his wishes for peace, and the wholesomeness of his every concert. Our sons were raised listening to the Clancys and Makem and today, young adults, they still enjoy Irish folk music. They also enjoy the music of the Clancy and Makem offspring and the new generation of performers of traditional Irish music that were influenced by them.Tommy's physical presence will be sorely missed but his music will continue wherever good people meet to share great folk songs. God Bless Tommy Makem and may the memory of his stregnth of character be a comfort to his family and fans.

To The Makem Family and Friends,I just got back from Ireland and had a wonderful visit. While visiting the Cliffs of Mohar, I came across a "street musician", and we spoke for a while of Irish music, and he played me a few tunes on banjo and whistle. As I listened to him play, I immediately thought of the music of Tommy Makem (a true gift to this world)! My appreciation for Irish music, is inherintly woven in my Irish heritage, but was fortified by the masterful playing of the greats like Tommy Maken. May God grant you sweet rest Tommy, and thank you for the great music you made for us all.

My earliest recollection of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem was in the late Sixties. I would listen to the “Hearty and Hellish” and “Live in Ireland” albums from my father’s collection and, though I was born in New Jersey, those records made me feel like I had home in the old country. Tommy’s passing brings a tinge of sadness. However, his music will continue to bring much joy and blessing to my life. Tonight, I will raise a “parting glass” to his memory.

Several years ago, when the Greenwich Odeum in East Greenwich, RI was in its infancy, we booked a favorite Irish folk singer of mine - and booked him year after year, reserving the Saturday after St. Patrick's Day for Tommy Makem. He graced our stage with a certain magnificence, and reached out in friendship with warmth and humor. I have memories of mentioning to Tommy on a Saturday night that I had hoped to buy his book "Tommy Makem's Secret Ireland," only we sold the last copy we had that night. My wife and I received a copy in the mail the next week, inscribed, wishing us "peace and joy." Tommy Makem made a huge impression on our lives, first as a friend and wonderful human being, and secondly as the amazing performer that he was.

I wept this morning when I learned the news about Tommy Maken. I wept for a lovely, lovely man who had given us all so much beauty and joy. His November concert at the Rochester Opera House marks the beginning of my holiday season. When my son was a very small child in the early 1960's, I played our Maken and Clancey's albums and we sang along with the performers while I did the weekly ironing. Whenever anyone asked how this small boy knew all of those Irish songs, the answer was Maken and Clancey and Mummy. My husband sent "Dancing With Bears" to that small boy's twin sons when they were infants. Somehow I think that Tommy Makem would appreciate the story of very small boys loving and learning his music.

Having heard his singing on the old LPs I was inspired to learn more. It encouraged me to follow the music wherever and however it came to town. I was fortunate as to be an emcee at the Cleveland Irish Cultural Festival where Mr. Makem performed for over twenty years. He was an entertainer to the first degree with music, songs, poetry and prose and his time on stage flowed with audiences riveted to his every word. His off the cuff knowlege of the Irish and their history was extensive and impressive. It was my observation that he was truly a gentle man with the mark of humility on him. It was a joy to watch him interact with the many people that he touched including my own father of Polish heritage who insisted on having his photo taken with him annually.Mr. Makem once recounted his arrival in the USA where the immigration officer stretched out his hand in friendship and told him to make a good life for himself. He told me it sounded like good advice so he took him up on it! We all know, there wasn't a lie in that story...Thanks for the memories

I first saw Tommy at a saloon in Cleveland called Pickle Bill's. He and Liam Clancy were performing and I was just back to Cleveland from college. We never listened to Irish music when I was growing up and I did not know of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. Well, to say I was floored would be an understatement. I bought some tapes and was hooked.I got a job selling steel and was covering several states in the upper Midwest but my Irish tapes and later CD's were my constant companions. I learned every song I could find and have become somewhat of an expert in Irish music. I don't play an instrument but I can sing with the best of them. I perform with a group call the Irish Heritage Singers out of the Irish American Heritage Center in Chicago, where I now live. I also perform with a group called Three Men in Kilts on occasion. Irish music has become my passion in life, and I owe it all to Tommy.I saw him perform at Fermi Lab here in Chicago, a venue with a small hall that is very intimate. After the performance the performers and audience meet for punch and cookies. I had a chance to meet Tommy in person and had my picture taken with him. We hired Tommy to perform at our summer "fesh" at the heritage center. I went int a room looking for something and here sat Tommy, eating a sandwich and trying to stay out of the line of fire. I introduced myself and we talked for a few minutes. I mentioned we had met before and without prompting he asked if it was at Fermi Lab! It had been several years but he remembered our conversation. Here is a man who meets thousands of people a year yet can remember a casual meeting several years before. That is how I will remember Tommy, that hot night in Chicago as he sang "Four Green Fields" and the audience went wild. Bill Mahoney

Tommy Makem touched me on many levels; he brought me curiosity, laughter, pleasure in music, and an overall sense of joy in Irishness. Ireland has lost its sweet gentle singer...and we are all diminished today.Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers were some of the few sane voices heard from a country that has been torn apart for far too long. And what voices they were... Tommy's in particular, soft, gentle, human, and humorous...I've had the great pleasure of meeting him twice; once in the hallway at Pickle Bill's in Cleveland after a minor brawl cleared the performance space, he commented humourously about the confusion and laughed at my petite second-generation Irish mother-in-law's desire to go back in there and tell off the two burly male combatants (and she would have too! had I let her!); the second at the Dublin, Ohio Irish Festival a few years ago. He was obviously frail then, had a pronounced tremble in his hands, but I noticed it went away the second he picked up his banjo. He was kind enough to listen to my stammered appreciation of his music and shake my hand (I didn't wash it for three days!).I will be at the Dublin Irish Festival again this weekend, celebrating my Irish heritage (I am the ultimate product of a green/orange marriage.) and thanking Tommy and the Clancy Brothers for bringing it to the world's attention.

My sister and I knew Tommy Makem's songs long before we met him in a local bakery in Jackson Heights, NY during the 1960s, when we were 9 & 10. He was from the same county as our mother's family and therefore very revered. The rebellious nature of his songs were appreciated in an emigrant household-father from Clare and mother's family from Armagh. We went to many NY Irish festivals to hear him sing with the Clancy Brothers and now as my niece and nephews are getting married and his songs are apart of our celebrations. I hope it brings comfort to his family -all the laughter, joy, songs and drinking that we treasure.

"...for the merry-hearted boys make the best of old men."Tommy Makem has a great deal to do with why I took up the tin whistle at age 18 and now find myself playing Clancy Bros. tunes in an Irish band at age 40. These unlikely turns of events were inspired in no small part by the earnest and playful nature of Tommy Makem's performances. I'm grateful to have been exposed to his music.

Tommy Makem was just one of a kind. His music reached everyone and I am one who will always remember him. My favorite song has and always will be "Four Green Fields" written and sung eloquently by Tommy. I shall miss his exceptional musical talent, which I envied

I am sorry to hear that he has died. I have listened to his music for years and consider myself fortunate to have seen him in concert; especially as it was in Liam Maguire's Pub in Falmouth, MA. What more appropriate place to hear Tommy Makem then in an Irish pub from the bar. He will be sorely missed.
